AVALON, NJ—This weekend, The Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children (The Home) welcomes for the first time a group of campers who will be joined by their sighted brothers and sisters for a special week of programming. 15 children (ages 7 to 15) will enjoy an all-expense-paid, one-week summer vacation at the beach.
The Sighted Siblings program allows returning campers the opportunity to
share camp friends and festivities with their sighted brothers or
sisters. Activities throughout the week will focus on familial bonding.
For many of these children, the camp is their first vacation at the
shore.
“The parents are so grateful that we have instituted this program,” said
Jen Layton, Camp Director. “Families take comfort in knowing they are
sending their children to camp together. One family had planned to send
their visually impaired daughter for just part of the week, but after
learning about the Sighted Siblings program, she and her sister will
attend for the duration of the program.”
Due to the popularity of the program, the sixth week of camp has also been reserved for Sighted Siblings.
Since 1972, The Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children in
Avalon, NJ has been providing a seashore vacation for visually impaired
children, ages 7 to 15, free of charge. The Home operates for eight
weeks, from mid-June to mid-August, and is staffed by certified staff
and administrators. Support of The Home is provided by volunteerism,
foundation grants, general donations, and community organizations. The
Home is a registered 501(c)3 charitable organization under the name
“Challenged Children’s Charities Corporation.”
