Two New Programs Added This Season for Campers with Sighted Siblings and Alumni Campers

THE HELEN L. DILLER VACATION HOME FOR BLIND CHILDREN IN AVALON, NJ KICKS OFF 2011 CAMP SEASON

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE―June 2, 2011

AVALON, NJ―The Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children (The Home) begins its 2011 camp season on June 18. More than 150 blind and visually impaired children from the tri-state area will enjoy an all expense paid, one week summer vacation at the shore.

The Home, which is staffed by certified counselors and administrators, can accommodate 20 campers each week and operates for eight weeks, from mid-June to mid-August. Campers range in age from 7 to 15 years old.

“The Home provides a memorable experience for many deserving children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy a week at the beach,” said Doug Heun, Board President. “For many of them, it’s their first vacation at the shore. Not only is it enormously fun for them, but they develop strong relationships with children just like them.”

In an effort to gear up for its 40th camp season in 2012, several new pilot programs have been implemented for the 2011 season:

  • In July, the camp will host its first Alumni Week, a special week welcoming back young adults (ages 16-20) who have previously attended summer sessions but no longer fit the traditional age range. This gives them the opportunity to return for a week of fun and to be reunited with other alumni campers.
  • Also in July, The Home will launch the first Sighted Siblings program, a week when campers will have the opportunity to attend with their sighted brother or sister. Participants will enjoy a week of bonding at the beach and special programming geared toward the siblings. (Based on the popularity of this program, a second week has already been added to the schedule.)
